Digital Marketing Tips to Grow Your Business

Digital Marketing Tips to Grow Your Business

The short answer: for a small business the right order is Google Business Profile first, then WhatsApp Business, then content and SEO, and paid ads last. Do it in reverse and you spend money without getting results.

Below is what each step involves, how long it takes, and the mistake people usually make at that step.

Step 1 — Google Business Profile (if you have a shop or local service)

This is the fastest-return free task there is. People searching "near me" arrive directly through it.

  • Fill in the business name, category, address and hours exactly right.
  • Upload at least ten real photos — the shopfront, the inside, your products, your team.
  • Ask every happy customer for a review, and reply to every review, good or bad.
  • Publish a "Post" once or twice a month — an offer, a new product, an announcement.

Common mistake: setting up the profile and then abandoning it. Google favours active profiles.

Step 2 — WhatsApp Business

Your customer is already on WhatsApp in India, which makes it both the cheapest and the most direct channel.

  • Build a catalog so you aren't typing out the price list again and again.
  • Set a greeting and away message so customers get an instant response.
  • Create quick replies for the usual questions — price, delivery, timings.
  • Use labels to organise customers: new lead, order placed, repeat customer.

Common mistake: overusing broadcasts. Send a promotional message every day and people will block you. Once a week, and only when it's genuinely useful.

Step 3 — Content and SEO

This works slowly, but once it does the free traffic keeps arriving for years.

  • Write down the questions customers ask you on the phone — those are the same things people type into Google.
  • Target local keywords: "[service] in [your city or area]".
  • Set up Google Search Console (free) to see which keywords you're appearing for.
  • Keep page speed under control — compress images, remove heavy plugins.
  • Link your posts to each other so a reader moves from one to the next.

For building links, see our backlink strategies guide.

Step 4 — Short video (Reels / Shorts)

The easiest format for reach right now. You don't need a studio — a phone is enough.

  • Hook the viewer in the first two seconds, or they scroll past.
  • One video, one point. Thirty to forty-five seconds is plenty.
  • Behind-the-scenes content often outperforms polished ads.
  • Consistency beats perfection. Three average videos a week beat one perfect video a month.

Step 5 — Email / newsletter

A social media audience belongs to the platform; an email list belongs to you. When the algorithm changes, the list is still yours.

  • Collect emails both on your website and at the billing counter.
  • Put something useful in every email, not just an offer.
  • Start on a free plan; move to a paid one only once the list grows.

Step 6 — Paid ads (last, not first)

Run ads once you already know which product sells and what questions customers ask. Otherwise you are paying money to learn.

  • Start with a small budget and test one thing at a time.
  • Set up conversion tracking first — without it you can't tell what's working.
  • Send the ad to the page it actually mentions, not to your homepage.

A simple weekly plan

  1. Monday: write down three content ideas for the week.
  2. Tuesday: publish one blog post or one detailed WhatsApp/Instagram post.
  3. Wednesday: shoot two or three short videos.
  4. Thursday: reply to reviews and publish a Google Business post.
  5. Friday: look at the numbers — what worked and what didn't.

Three or four hours a week is enough. Consistency is the whole trick.

What budget do I need to start?

You can run the first three months at ₹0 — Google Business, WhatsApp and organic content are all free. Start paid ads only once organic tells you which product and message actually work.

Which platform should I pick first?

Wherever your customer already is. A local shop starts with Google Business. A B2B service starts with LinkedIn and SEO. A visual product starts with Instagram. Trying to be everywhere at once is the most common mistake.

How long does SEO take to show results?

Usually 3–6 months on a new site. Expecting rankings in the first month only leads to disappointment — which is why you should run a fast channel (Google Business or WhatsApp) alongside SEO.

Should I hire an agency?

Usually not at the start. Run the basics yourself first so you know what works — otherwise you won't be able to judge whether an agency is doing a good job.
