How it works

How the Income Tax Calculator works

This calculator works out the tax under both regimes for salaried individuals and shows them side by side. The new regime has lower rates but almost no deductions; the old regime has higher rates but allows deductions such as 80C, 80D and HRA. Which regime is "better" therefore differs from person to person.

Formula

Taxable income = Gross − standard deduction (− deductions, under the old regime)

Then slab-wise tax, then the rebate, then a 4% health & education cess.

FAQ

Income Tax Calculator — common questions

Does this include surcharge?

No. This calculator covers the standard deduction, slab tax, rebate and the 4% cess. The surcharge that applies at very high incomes is not included, so in those cases your actual tax will be higher.

Can I switch regimes every year?

Salaried individuals generally get to choose a regime each financial year, while different rules apply to those with business income. Confirm your own case with a chartered accountant.

Is this result my final tax?

No, it is an estimate. Your actual liability is also affected by capital gains, other income, exempt allowances and surcharge. Verify on the official portal or with a chartered accountant before filing.

Where do these slabs come from?

They are stored in one place in the site's /data/calculators.php file and apply to the financial year shown above. After each Budget only that one array needs updating.
